Team Japan has been disbanded after returning from the London Olympic Games loaded down with medals.
A total of 188 athletes attended a ceremony to disband the team and a press conference at a Tokyo hotel Tuesday night.
"Not only did we win a record number of medals, but our athletes received a record number of Olympic diplomas" given to people in the first eight positions in each event, said Haruki Uemura, head of the Japanese Olympic athletes' team. "At the same time, we realize how difficult it is to win gold medals at the Olympics."
Gymnast Kohei Uchimura, who won gold in the men's individual all-around competition, and several other athletes who returned to Japan earlier attended the ceremony.
Of the 76 medalists at the London Games, 72 attended Tuesday's ceremony, and they all commented on their experiences.
Saori Yoshida, who won her third straight Olympic gold in the 55-kilogram division in the women's freestyle wrestling, said, "We were able to win many medals thanks to support from the public."
