The amount of radiation released is estimated to be of order of \(10^{18}\) Becquerel, mainly with Iodine–131 (Comparable to \(10^{18}\) Becquerel at the Chernobyl disaster.)

As the Soviet veterans used to hide the map of contamination after the Chernobyl disaster (1986, USSR), the Japanese officials used to keep in secret the map of the resulting contamination after the Fukushima disaster. The sabotage of the information service make the population furious; the mass protests forced the dismissal of government of Kan Naoto in 2011 and shut–down of all the nuclear plants in the country in 2012.
