Letter to Nava is petition by [1], addressed to Navanethem Pillay, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The letter is about sentence to Aleksei Navalny by judge Sergei Blinov; many authors indicate, that this sentence is politically motivated and the trial had been used as instrument of elimination of competitors at the public election. Due to the total corruption in Russia, the attempts to recover the constitutional order in Russia may have scientific interest. For this reason, the text of this petition is copyasted below.

Petition

To:
Ms. Navanethem Pillay, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights
We are addressing you on behalf of our organizations as well as individual supporters of our appeal – citizens of different countries – with an urgent request: to look into the circumstances of the criminal case, trial and sentencing of Alexey Navalny, a prominent opposition figure in Russia, and to provide your assessment of this case and the jail sentence from the standpoint of international human rights norms. The jail term announced on July 18 is be the first such sentencing of a leading opposition politician in post-communist Russia. It will serve to intimidate anyone who participates or even only thinks of participating in Russian politics on the side of the opposition. For this reason, it is a cause for grave concern for many people, both inside and outside of Russia, who care about its democratic development, regardless of their opinions of Alexey Navalny’s political views.

Ludmila Alexeyeva, Russia’s most senior human rights defender and the chairperson of the Moscow Helsinki Group, stated that Mr.Navalny was being tried “for the crimes that he had not committed.” This opinion is shared by most of Russia’s human rights organizations.

In light of the above, we ask you to provide your assessment of this trial and of the sentence, as well as its implications for Russia’s democratic development.

We appreciate your consideration of our request and stand ready to provide further information on this case as well as on the deteriorating human rights situation in Russia.

Sincerely,

American Russian-Speaking Association for Civil & Human Rights (USA)
and
Association Russie-Libertes (France),
as well as the signatories below
