Localhost, or 127.0.0.1 is name of a secret directory that contains a script, that can be opened in a browser and show words It works!.

In some lucky cases, the file that produces words It works! can be found; often on the directory

/Library/WebServer/Documents

In other cases, the sentence It works! is stored somewhere else, and modification of file

/Library/WebServer/Documents/index.html.en

does not affect the message and does not allow to fill the content of the localhost with a more meaningful information.

In general, the sentence It works! may have meaning, opposite to that it could have in a conventional English. This sentence indicates, that the Apache server is not configured well, is not useful, or reveals serious damage, corruption of the file system.
